Top Fruiting Lion's Mane
This article explores an alternative method to grow Lion's Mane using a kit. First, fruiting refers to creating conditions that trigger the growth of fruit bodies on your mushroom block. This typically involves making one or more cuts in the block. Fresh air plays a crucial role in determining where and when primordia (tiny initial fruit bodies) will form.
There are several reasons you might choose "top fruiting" for your mushrooms. One reason is if mushroom fruit bodies start to grow and overextend at the top of the bag. This can happen if a block matures longer than the ideal time for standard fruiting. Another reason is intentionally growing mushrooms this way. To achieve this, wait until growth begins on top of your block. Once it reaches about 1 to 2 inches tall, cut off the top portion of the bag about 2 inches from the growth using clean scissors. This method results in a large mass of fruit bodies with a more irregular shape compared to typical spherical mushroom fruits.
If you're using one of our kits, mist the included humidity chamber and place it over your block. If you have your own or another kit/block, place it somewhere that can maintain humidity and provides adequate fresh air exchange.
